CMI Outreach 2022

CMI education and outreach ranges from youth to adult, with an emphasis on workforce development.

The CMI workforce development team Danielle Ladd, Yamah Nabiyar, Dorian Gursky and Cynthia Howell at Colorado School of Mines worked with NEXUS research center, Mines Admissions and the Mines Museum of Earth Science to deliver the Rocky Mountain Math Engineering Science Achievement (RM MESA) Fall Kick-Off workshop for Colorado teachers and graduate student mentors. Cynthia Howell welcomed the group and highlighted the partners coming together to make this event possible and introduced the delivery team. CMI’s Danielle Ladd presented outreach information throughout the day, which included the CMI lessons that she developed. CMI’s past graduate research associate Yamah Nabiyar joined Chemistry Professor Christian Beren in supporting the group with valuable inputs, taking photos and program organization. In the afternoon workshop attendees were treated to a Mines Museum of Earth Science Reception of Teacher Resources and Keynote speaker Craig Brice, who described Mines materials scientists working with movie producers to create the costume for Ironman. CMI’s new museum docent and exhibit guide, Dorian Gursky, prepared the CMI outreach table featuring our Materials Science Outreach Tool Kit and gathered those asking for a CMI museum exhibit tour.

These CMI alums, who now work in industry and for national laboratories, shared advice on networking and career development. This year’s panel speakers were: Allie Anderson, PhD, 2017, PhD in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, R&D Engineer, Gopher Resource (shown on screen), Philip C. Keller, PhD 2020, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Process Engineer, Energy Fuels Resources (USA) Inc. (shown seated far right), and Marilú Pérez García, PhD, 2014, PhD in Chemistry, Iowa State University, Scientist II, Ames Laboratory (shown seated to right of screen).

Oral and poster presentations are the main event at the CMI Winter Meeting. The CMI Leadership Team served as moderators for the oral presentations and served as judges for the event, selecting two winning presentations. Best Presentation, First Place Award: ChaoChao Pan, Ames Laboratory, “Develop Continuous Hot-Roll Method to Fabricate High-Temperature Nd-Fe-B Magnets Free of Dy” and Best Presentation, Honorable Mention: Meng Shi, Idaho National Laboratory, “Li2CO3 Recovery from Lithium-ion Battery Leachate." The fourth cohort of the Leadership Academy judged the poster presentations, and identified two winning posters. Best Poster, First Place Award: Caleb Stetson, Idaho National Laboratory (shown with CMI Deputy Director Rod Eggert), “Effect of Solute Ratios and Crystal Lattice on Metal Separations via Solvent-Driven Fractional Precipitation” and Best Poster, Honorable Mention: Kayla Cunningham, Colorado School of Mines, “Impacts of Rare Earth Elements on the Activity and Gene Expression of Nitrosomonas Europaea”
