Patent diagram for magnet that includes a material having chemical formula YFe3(Ni1-xCox)2, where x is greater than 0 and x is less than 1.

CMI researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory conducted the research for this highlight.

Innovation
CMI research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory resulted in a novel rare earth permanent magnet formula that now has earned a U.S. patent.

Achievement
U.S. Patent 11,837,389 YCo5-based compounds doped with Fe or Ni for high-performance permanent magnets was awarded December 5, 2023, to CMI’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory team of Alexander Landa, Per Soderlind, Emily Moore, and Aurelien Perron.

Significance and Impact
Novel permanent magnet formulas have the potential to help develop the U.S. magnet supply chain.

Hub Target Addressed
Developed alternate magnet formulation to address supply chain needs for domestic permanent magnet manufacturing.
