Central Academy wins 2010 Middle School Science Bowl

AMES, Iowa – Central Academy Middle School of Des Moines won a pair of matches against Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School of Dubuque here on Saturday to capture the 2010 Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional Middle School Science Bowl. Central Academy advances to the National Science Bowl®, to be held April 29 - May 4, 2010 in Washington, D.C. and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Central Academy staged a comeback after losing to defending champion Eleanor Roosevelt 68-72 in an earlier round of the double-elimination quiz bowl competition. The Central Academy team of Maxwell Pilcher, Nicholas Parker, Rachel Suen, Michael Shimp and Michael Cummings won matches against Lynnville-Sully, Cedar Rapids McKinley and Home Schools of Eastern Iowa to earn a rematch against Eleanor Roosevelt.
Central Academy won the first match 86-54 against Roosevelt, giving each team one loss and forcing a rubber match. Roosevelt’s team of Pooja Patel, Rachel Bruflodt, Jacob Locher, Vivian Medithi and Robert Zartman kept it close early, but Central pulled away to win 94-36 and capture the championship.
The Central Academy middle schoolers, coached by Joyce Johnson, will join their older counterparts in making the trip to Washington, D.C. for the National Science Bowl. Central Academy won the High School Science Bowl Regional held in Ames on Jan. 30.
Besides the academic quiz bowl, the 16 teams of middle school students, also competed on Friday night, racing model solar cars they designed and built from a common set of parts. Home Schools of Eastern Iowa won that competition, topping South Hamilton in the final race.
Besides the teams mentioned above, students from the following middle schools participated in the 2010 Middle School Science Bowl: Anthon-Oto-Maple Valley, Adel-DeSoto-Minburn, Boone, Evans (Ottumwa), Johnston, Mediapolis, Mount Vernon, Nodaway Valley, Notre Dame (Burlington), and Walnut.
