Developed critical rare earth-free permanent magnets with strong performance and efficient production to address supply risks and economize domestic magnet manufacturing.

Achievement
U.S. Patent 11,469,537 Permanent Magnet Alloys for Gap Magnets was awarded May 16, 2023, to CMI’s Ames National Laboratory team of Andriy Palasyuk, Tej N. Lamichhane, Olena Palasyuk, Vladimir Antropov, Paul C. Canfield, Ralph W. McCallum. 

Significance and Impact
This CMI technology will transform existing magnet industries for automotive, sensor, and medical devices by offering better performance in comparison to ferrites, and free up critical Nd and Dy for high energy applications like EV motors and wind turbines. It will ease magnet supply chain criticality by using abundant Ce, and simplify and domesticate magnet production by eliminating all powder processing steps.
