New Ce-based ferromagnet with readily available coercivity

Upper part – hysteresis loop of the as-cast material with magnetic characteristics with  (BH)max reaching 2.1 MGOe. Lower part shows the X-ray pattern and the SEM backscattered image of the new ferromagnet showing its composite nature.

Innovation
Novel cerium-based magnets for U.S. national needs

Achievement
Discovery of new 2:7-type Cerium-Zirconium-Cobalt-Iron composite ferromagnetic system with magnetic characteristics suitable for development of material cost effective permanent magnet material

Significance and Impact
Material develops significant extrinsic magnetic properties, e.g., coercivity and squareness of the hysteresis loop, readily after synthesis and allows utilization of abundant domestic Cerium (50% of Mountain Pass ore)

Hub Target Addressed
