Innovation
CMI postdoc Jayanthi Kumar at Arizona State University transitions to a postdoc position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Achievement
As a synthetic materials chemist, Jayanthi is part of a network of CMI trained researchers that are building upon their expertise in critical materials research  within U.S. industries, academia and national laboratories.

Significance and Impact

  • Jayanthi’s expertise in synthesis of layered materials helped in preparation and characterization of sorbents for lithium extraction from brines and clay minerals.
  • Thermodynamic analysis provides insight into the stability of these materials and their use in processing geothermal brines.
  • Addressing critical materials challenges requires building a large community of highly-trained researchers and CMI is an important source of the expertise that is needed for practical solutions.
