System-level demonstration of a torque coupler with CMI magnets

CMI researchers at Ames National Laboratory conducted the research for this highlight

Innovation
Prototyped and integrated dysprosium-free CMI hot-rolled (HR) strip magnets into a magnetic torque coupler and a torsional coupling test rig for machine protection. This demonstrates a novel system-level pathway for rare-earth-reduced magnetic components.

Achievement

  • Successfully demonstrated a 70 W, 500 rpm torque coupler prototype which validates the mechanical integration and operational feasibility of HR strip magnets.
  • Modeling shows that the HR strip-magnet coupler significantly suppresses torque ripples, which would enable smoother torque transmission than conventional magnet layouts.

Significance and impact

  • Provides a scalable platform for benchmarking CMI magnets with commercial compositions and guiding additional maturation.
  • Creates a pathway for a potential beachhead application for CMI HR magnet.

Hub Goal Addressed
Prototyping of REE-reduced or REE-free permanent magnets.
