E-waste collection event

CMI researchers from Idaho National Laboratory conducted the activity for this highlight

Achievement
Yuan-Yuan Lee, Julia Gilfillan and INL K12 team members hosted the e-waste collection outreach at local high schools. The team discussed the principles of materials, reuse and recycling to minimize environmental impact and conserve resources. A CMI model and education toolkit were utilized during the sessions.

Significance and Impact

  • Students had the opportunity to play with the model and conduct various simulations on potential impacts of energy technology deployment on critical materials supply chains. Students explored the concept of the product life cycle with particular emphasis on the principles of materials, reuse, and recycling.
  • Students gained understanding on the value of e-waste recycling, the impacts on Critical materials supply and the implications on U.S. energy security.
