Innovation
CMI Leadership Academy researcher Dr. Lesta Fletcher (ORNL) visited her hometown of Pine Grove, West Virginia, to teach Valley High School students about critical materials and the CMI Hub.

Achievement

  • Lesta brought her CMI toolkit on the road to sophomore high school students in an earth science class at Valley High School, West Virginia
  • Students were amazed to learn that they owned and used items everyday that contain critical materials during the “What’s In Your Pocket” activity.
  • “The Strength of Magnets” activity, in which students raced to build a magnetic icosahedron with Nd magnets, was voted class favorite.
  • Runner-up was “A Tale of Two Magnets,” where students observed the differences in speed when dropping neodymium and ceramic magnets through a copper tube.
