CMI researchers from Colorado School of Mines conducted the research for this highlight.

Achievement
CMI Deputy Director and Founding Director write about critical materials as part of books aimed at the research community (Modern Permanent Magnets, 2022) and policy makers and the public at large (Critical Minerals, the Climate Crisis and the Tech Imperium, 2023).

Significance and Impact

  • The chapter in Modern Permanent Magnets highlights the supply chains and potential risks associated with production of the magnet materials neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium, samarium and cobalt.
  • The chapter in the Tech Imperium suggests seven guiding principles for thinking about public policy in the messy middle ground between extreme versions of letting the market decide and industrial policy.

Hub Target Addressed
Placing science and engineering research in a broader social context and allowing CMI to participate in and help frame policy issues and public understanding of critical materials.
