CMI graduate researcher defends doctoral dissertation, to join CMI industry team member in January

Innovation
Apurba Kumar Saha, a CMI graduate researcher at the University of Arizona, successfully defended his PhD dissertation in November 2024. He will join Western Digital in San Jose, CA, as a Data Scientist in January 2025.

Achievement

  • Developed mathematical models to optimize the reverse logistics network of Li-ion battery recycling in the United States and evaluated the impact of government policies.
  • Co-authored five papers supported by CMI. Four published, one under review.
  • Awarded 2022 Environmental Research & Education Foundation Scholarship.

Significance and Impact
The proposed models will help companies maximize profit through optimal facility locations and transportation flows identification. They will also facilitate development of optimal policies for sustainable recycling.
