CMI bio-based separation research on cover of JACS Au

CMI at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Penn State conducted the activity for this highlight

Achievement
Critical Materials Innovation Hub research is on the cover of the Journal of the American Chemical Society Au, November 2024.

Significance and Impact

  • CMI research on hetero-ion complex formation in the REE binding protein lanmodulin has been recognized with a cover in JACS Au.
  • Artwork features a mathematical, biochemical, and structural depiction of hetero-ion complex formation (i.e., binding of two different REEs) by lanmodulin, with the speciation prediction for a 10-ion “battle royale” depicted as a stacked bar plot.
  • Understanding the hetero-ion binding preferences of lanmodulin enabled accurate prediction of REE recovery from a range of feedstocks, providing an important first step toward a process model for lanmodulin-based REE separations.

Hub Goals Addressed
CMI Grand Challenge: Developing highly selective separation from complex sources.
