Innovation
Ames National Laboratory assisted Vulcan Elements, a U.S.-based start-up magnet producer, in assessing the quality of NdFeB recovered from allied sources using the Advanced Magnet Facility at Ames Laboratory.

Achievement
Working closely with Vulcan Elements, Ames Laboratory used conventional powder sintering processing methodologies to demonstrate and validate high-performance Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets could be fabricated that met magnetic performance, microstructure and thermal stability corresponding to commercial grades.

Significance and Impact
Demonstration of the ability to fabricate Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets from feedstock materials has provided Vulcan Elements with verification of the quality of their feedstock is sufficient for production of commercial grade sintered magnets.

Hub Target Addressed
Accelerated high-performance magnet development, maturation and commercialization in the United States.
