44 MG-Oe hot-roll-processed magnet

CMI researchers at Ames National Laboratory conducted the research for this highlight.

Innovation
Produced an M-grade nanograin NdFeB magnet achieving 44.2 MGOe (BH)max using our novel hot-roll fabrication process.

Achievement
10% BHmax increase beyond Yr-12 record. Matches the performance of today’s most-sold nanograin magnets made by the conventional hot-press/hot-deformation route.

Significance and Impact

  • Validates our hypothesis on the effect of rigid mechanical boundary condition on density and texture.
  • Improved properties put effort within striking distance of large market demand N45SH thin magnet.

Hub Goal Addressed
Microstructural engineering to reduce the need for dysprosium.

Magnetic properties of the NanoNeo magnet fabricated using the novel hot-roll method.
