CMI Outreach 2014

CMI partner Colorado School of Mines welcomed 180 sixth and seventh grade students to learn about Earth, energy, the environment, critical materials and mining.

CMI education and outreach ranges from youth to adult, with an emphasis on workforce development

  • Colorado School of Mines, October 18: 14 members of the Owen Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver visited Colorado School of Mines for a museum tour to see minerals, phosphors and metals and to discuss the materials people use daily.
  • Colorado School of Mines, July 17: 150 underserved sixth graders visited Colorado School of Mines.
  • Colorado School of Mines, July 9: 180 6th and 7th graders visited Colorado School of Mines, including the geology museum. Mines experts described rare earth elements as they relate to the middle school world and renewable energy. The students enjoyed a chemistry show by professor Jim Horan, and exploring the Geology Museum.
  • Colorado School of Mines, June 4 and June 11: CMI researchers John Speer and Brajendra Mishra described the Energy Innovation Hub to about 40 students visiting CSM for the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.
  • Gilbert Middle School, April 11: CMI Director Alex King talked to five sections of sixth grade language arts students. Their teacher invited him after they read about rare earth elements in the Scholastic Science World magazine.
  • Colorado Mathematics, Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Day Design Challenge, April 18: Dr. Cynthia Howell judged an engineering competition for middle and high school students.  About 800 students and teachers attended the event.
  • American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), March 26-29: Dr. Cynthia Howell participated as a STEM outreach presenter and poster judge.  The topic was Rare Earth Elements to Renewable Energy--Gifts of the Land.
  • Osborn Club lecture at Iowa State University, March 10: CMI Director Alex King presented "Critical Materials: Past, Present and Future"
  • DiscoverE Engineering Week, Feb. 20: Colorado School of Mines hosted more than 100 high school students
  • Honors students at Iowa State University, Feb. 7: CMI Director Alex King talked to ISU honors students for Honors Salon #7.
