Success for the Critical Materials Institute will be defined by how well it meets its mission to assure supply chains of materials critical to clean energy technologies. To enable innovation in U.S. manufacturing and to enhance U.S. energy security, CMI must develop, demonstrate, and deploy clean energy technology. To direct research in a way to minimize the time to discovery and the time between discovery and deployment, the CMI team includes both research and industrial partners.

One measure of progress is invention disclosures, which highlight areas where research may lead to a patent and licensing of a technology or progress.  CMI researchers have created many invention disclosures and filed dozens of patent applications, with 14 patents issued.

Per the executed CMI Intellectual Property Management Plan, CMI Team Members have the first right of refusal to CMI Award Intellectual Property. With the exception of an exclusive license, the invention disclosures listed are CMI Award Intellectual Property that is available for licensing outside of the Team Members. CMI partners have executed eight licenses for CMI research.
