Student Opportunities

Undergraduate Students

Internships

All student interns at Ames National Laboratory will enjoy benefits of our Launch Experience.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program is a premier Department of Energy internship designed to bring undergraduates into the laboratory research setting at Ames National Laboratory and Iowa State University to work with scientists who are leaders in their research fields. Students from across the country spend either 16 weeks in the fall and spring semesters or 10 weeks in the summer in our SULI program.

The Community College Internships (CCI) Program is a premier Department of Energy internship designed to bring community college students into the technical research setting at the Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University to work with scientists and technicians who are leaders in their fields.  Students from across the country spend 10 weeks in the summer--or 16 weeks in fall and spring semesters--in our CCI program.

Other opportunities

The Ames National Laboratory Pathways Summer School is a data science and artificial intelligence workshop for energy solutions. Early undergraduate students will spend five-weeks at Ames Lab to receive training and mentoring in data science through active learning opportunities.

The Iowa State/Ames Lab SCIENCES Experience is a unique opportunity specifically for Iowa State undergraduate students. Ames Lab has a series of paid, undergraduate research and operations positions that allow students to work up to 300 hours at Ames Lab being mentored by scientists, staff and joint faculty.

Graduate Students

The Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program prepares graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission.
