Selective separation of PGMs, precious metals, and critical elements from selenium crude residue

CMI Highlight 637, February 2025

CMI researchers from Missouri S&T conducted the activity for this highlight

Innovation
Flowsheet development for the selective separation of PGMs, precious metals, and critical elements from unconventional sources (Se residue).

Achievement
The vacuum distillation process of crude Se, containing 40% water, >90% Se, 3% Te, and 0.24% PGMs and precious metals, indicated that approximately 92% of the mass was removed when heating the sample up to 400⁰C, with the majority of the removed material expected to be Se.

Significance and Impact

  • Increase domestic production of PGMs
  • Decrease energy consumption
  • Supply chain diversification

Hub Target Addressed
Improving efficiency of PGM production from domestic sources
