Nd metal successfully produced with fluoride-based feedstock without hazardous chemicals

CMI researchers from Ames National Laboratory and an industry partner conducted the activity for this highlight

Innovation
Neodymium metal was produced by calciothermic reduction of water-free REE-fluoride made without using or generating hydrogen fluoride (HF).

Achievement
Produced Na-Nd-F without using HF, via a highly scalable synthesis method. Produced more than 120 g of Nd metal from calciothermic reduction of the Na-Nd-F.

Significance and Impact

  • Produced rare earth metals from feedstock bypassing use or generation of hazardous chemicals.
  • Support domestic production of Nd metal and Nd-Fe-B magnet.

Hub Target Addressed
Advancing efficient and cost-effective rare earth element production.
