Innovation 
VITELiS (Vacuum-Induced Thermal Extraction of Lithium from α-Spodumene) aims to unlock >95% of Lithium available in domestic hard-rock ore, diversifying the lithium supply.

Achievement
We achieved 95–99% lithium extraction at the kg scale by demonstrating that pre‑milling of α‑spodumene is essential and by optimizing milling, mixing, and annealing conditions to minimize energy and processing time.

Significance and Impact
Delivered a single‑step, water‑ and acid/base‑free extraction process that cuts the temperature to 800 °C and enables reuse/recycle of residual waste.

Recovery or purification processes to expand U.S. lithium production; highly selective extraction and separations; minimizing hazardous chemical use and waste generation.
