Innovation
CMI postdoc, Dr. Chaochao Pan, won the First Prize and the People’s Choice awards at the “Research SLAM” competition at Ames National Lab.

Achievement
Dr. Pan is emerging as a CMI-developed early-career critical materials researcher.

Significance and Impact
CMI supported Dr. Pan’s Ph.D. research on developing a cost-effective manufacturing method for producing Dy-free nanograin-NdFeB magnets already competitive with some commercial magnet grades. After graduation, Dr. Pan chose to continue working on this technology at Ames and is advancing it toward commercialization.

Hub Targets Addressed
Training the critical materials workforce of the future.
