Innovation
A new thermal analysis technique allows measurements to be performed on bulk samples at extreme heating and cooling rates and in high magnetic fields using an electromagnetic induction furnace.
Achievement
- Measure transformation temperatures of bulk materials in magnetic fields (0-9 T), at high temperatures (up to 1750 C) and high heating rates (>1000 C/min)
- Informs heat treatments for streamlining experimental design
- Compatible with existing commercial processing technology
Significance and Impact
Demonstrate working prototype and receive U.S. Patent 10,782,193
Hub Target Addressed
Win industry adoption of three technologies related to materials substitution for rare earth magnet materials.
