Critical Materials Institute (CMI) graduate student researcher Yi Ji is a Ph.D. candidate in the Environmental Ecological Engineering (EEE) program at Purdue University. Her CMI-funded research includes projects on recovery of cathode materials from end-of-life electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Her research focuses on cathode material sustainable recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and fluoride pollution reduction during recycling process. She investigates the feasibility of different methods to delaminate cathode materials, and works to improve separation efficiency. She has assessed aging effects to direct recycling rechnologies on end-of-life cathode.

Yi Ji also teaches a graduate level course on evaluation of LIB recycling technologies. She is co-advised by Dr. Fu Zhao and Dr. Chad T. Jafvert. She earned her M.S. degree from the EEE program at Purdue in 2019, and is on target to complete her doctoral program in May 2022.
