    Iver Anderson, senior metallurgist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory and adjunct professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Iowa State University, has been chosen as a recipient of the 2014 Application to Practice Award by TMS, the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

    Ames High School defeated Des Moines Central Academy 50-36 in the championship match here Saturday to win the 2014 Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl. Ames will advance to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, April 24-27 in Washington D.C.

    Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory have demonstrated broadband terahertz (THz) wave generation using metamaterials. The discovery may help develop noninvasive imaging and sensing, and make possible THz-speed information communication, processing and storage. The results appeared in the Jan. 8 issue of Nature Communications.

    The U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory continues to score high in scientific performance according to the just-released 2013 DOE Laboratory Performance Report Card.   Ames Lab received an A- for Mission Accomplishment (Quality and Productivity of R&D).

    A pair of Ames Lab and Iowa State researchers have developed 3-D teleconferencing technology that's live, real-time and streaming at 30 frames per second. They say it took a lot of late nights to solve the technical problems associated with image capture, transmission and display. They also say the technology could be ready for smart phones in a few years.
