CMI Project 2.3.11: Al-REE alloy development for advanced manufacturing (AL-REE ADAM) Research Highlights

New Al-Ce alloy with tunable high strength

CMI researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of Tennessee - Knoxville and Eck Industries conducted the research for this highlight

Strength is enabled by the large fraction of nanoscale intermetallic phases, bright in the above electron microscope image

Al-Ce nano extrusion outperforms usual high temp Al alloy

CMI researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory conducted the activity for this highlight

Tensile yield strength of Al-Ce-Mg Nano Extrusion compared to 2618-T6, the commercial high temperature Al alloy of choice

Groundbreaking temperature-resistant Al-REE alloy

CMI researchers at Ames Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Eck Industries conducted the activity for this highlight

Line graph shows trend for thermal coarsening at 300°C of Al-REE and high strength Al alloy 7075. The average size of strengthening particles in 7075 increases dramatically, reducing the hardness. In Al-REE, strengthening particle size and hardness are minimally changed by the same thermal exposure.

Selective laser melting improves mechanical properties of Al-Ce alloys

CMI researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Ames Laboratory conducted the research for this highlight

Laser melting and rapid solidification imparts specific nanostructure
