CMI Project 1.1.18: Gallium, indium and germanium extraction from zinc residue produced for steel wastes

Michael Moats at Missouri S&T leads the project "Gallium, indium, and germanium extraction from zinc residue produced for steel wastes"

Gallium, germanium, and indium are critical building blocks for modern electronics. The Missouri University of Science and Technology and Colorado School of Mines are partnering to evaluate the recovery of these elements from zinc plant residues. American Zinc Recycling (AZR) treats electric arc furnace dusts, a steel recycling waste, and produces high purity zinc. This project will examine novel pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods to extract gallium, germanium, and indium from AZR’s domestic zinc plant and potentially generate a sustainable domestic supply of these critical materials.
