Getting Started
Our program begins on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, and runs through Friday, Julyt 31, 2020. Each student will be paired with an Ames Laboratory scientist/mentor for their internship; however, students should also expect to work closely with graduate students. Our program is 10 weeks in length to allow interns sufficient time to write papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals, as suggested by mentors. Each student will also be required to prepare many other assignments.  You will be required under the SULI program to make an oral or poster presentation on the outcome of your research activities, complete a 1500-3000 word research project report, a general audience abstract, and a one-page peer review of another SULI intern's talk or poster prior to the end of the program. Calendar 
While your internship will naturally revolve around your work in the research laboratory, there will be other opportunities to expand your scientific knowledge through tours and presentations. As details for these events are finalized they will be added to the online calendar.  Students will also meet with the internship coordinator regularly to discuss any issues related to their internship. Check calendar for dates and meeting locations. Deadlines for meeting deliverables will also be indicated on the calendar.

Computers
There are several options for computer access during the 10-week program:
1) bring your own computer
2) use a department computer (your mentor will alert you to the availability in your assigned department)
3) utilize computer labs located throughout campus

Housing
The apartment complex for summer SULI, CCI and VFP undergraduates is Frederiksen Court--located on the north side of campus (a 15 minute walk to most major campus buildings). We will assign you to an apartment before you arrive. Rooming lists will be sent via email. Passenger elevator access is available to all residents in these 3-story apartments. The Frederiksen Court apartments selected for our summer session are designed for 4 occupants with 2 shared bedrooms (2 people per bedroom with lofted beds).  The apartments are air-conditioned, carpeted or solid-surface throughout, and furnished as follows: Bedroom furniture includes a bed (lofted with furniture below), clothing drawers, desk, chair, file caddy, and wardrobe. Living room furniture includes a sofa, armchair, end table, coffee table, and if a ceiling light is not present, then a table and floor lamp. Laundry and kitchen appliances include washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and garbage disposal. Telephone lines are not active in the apartments. Exterior building telephones will be active for emergency and local calls; long-distance calls require a calling card.  Each apartment has basic and expanded basic cable (televisions are not supplied). Apartments have wired internet access in each bedroom and also have wireless internet access. Residents provide their own study lamps, bed linens (for 36” x 80” XL twin-sized mattress), mattress pad, pillows, blankets, bedspreads, towels, washcloths, wastebaskets, cleaning supplies, cooking/dining items, and ethernet cable (if desired). Custodial service is not provided in the apartments. Residents will be provided a list of items to be cleaned upon check-out.

Alcoholic beverages may be consumed in the privacy of a Frederiksen Court apartment if individuals are age twenty-one or older. Smoking is prohibited on all university grounds, including parking lots, and in all university-owned or operated buildings, residence halls and apartments.

Frederiksen Court will be staffed with live-in Community Advisors (CA’s) in the ratio of approximately 1 CA for every 200 residents. Community Advisors will serve as an information resource for program participants regarding Department and University policies and procedures. They will also enforce Department policies, such as when noise, dangerous or destructive behavior occurs. The Frederiksen Court Office, located within the Frederiksen Court Community Center also serves as a resource for guests.

Move-in Days: Saturday, Sunday and Monday (May 23, 24 and 25)
Move-out Days: Friday, July 31 (AFTER 5:30), Saturday, August 1

Our program does not provide funding for off-site housing.  This includes students who may already have housing in Ames. We believe part of the overall SULI experience is the growth experience provided by having our student interns live together in on-campus apartments during our internships.  We feel the sharing of information and the camaraderie that comes from after-hours interactions is a valuable take-away from our program, a take-away that can last a lifetime.  We do not mandate that students live in provided housing during their internship, but our program will not fund off-site housing. Please do not ask us to make a concession for you.

Meals
The program does not pay for meal plans at Iowa State University's dining venues. Your apartment contains kitchen appliances—but no cookware, utensils or dinnerware. The two closest grocery stores are approximately 2 miles from the apartments (will probably require a vehicle, bus ride or bike). Internet and Wireless Access
Frederiksen Court apartments are wireless. Guests bringing a laptop need to bring an ethernet cable if they plan to plug into the ISU campus network by using the ethernet ports in their Frederiksen Court apartment living room for wired access to the internet. Guests may also locate a wireless point on campus. Refer to this link for updated locations for wireless points on the ISU campus.

Apartment Parking
Parking is available at the Frederiksen Court apartment complex. If you indicated to us that you will have a car in the apartment parking lot, a permit will be in your orientation packet (you won't get a ticket during the move-in weekend). The program will pay for apartment parking. On-campus parking permits will be the responsibility of each participant (not paid by the program).

Orientation
Mandatory orientation will be held on the morning of Tuesday, May 26 in 301 Spedding. You will not have parking passes for campus, so give yourself time to get here on foot or bicycle or bus.  A campus map can be found in the "Maps" section above. Bring one form of government-issued identification (i.e. driver's license). Orientation will take all day (lunch will be provided). You will complete Human Resource forms, computer access forms, obtain an ISU ID, meet your mentors during lunch and attend basic lab training.

Laboratory Supplies 
Laboratory coats, safety glasses and lab notebooks are required for work in the laboratory. The SULI program will pay for these expenses.

Pay / Stipend
All SULI interns will receive a stipend of $500 per week during  the 10-week internship period. You will get paid monthly, so plan accordingly.  SULI participants are not Ames Lab (or ISU) employees; therefore, students will not receive a W2 at income tax time.  Each will receive a 1099-MISC (sent to the permanent address indicated on your application).   The stipend is taxable income.  Please check with your tax preparer if you have questions about filing your tax return.

Preprogram Survey 
Log back into the Department of Energy SULI Web site and complete the preprogram survey. It isn't due until after you arrive on campus, but it would be in your best interest to do as much as you can before your arrival.

Public Transportation
The Ames bus system (CyRide) is a safe, clean, cost-effective means of transportation.  Take advantage of this unique opportunity!

Reimbursement for Travel
The maximum amount for travel reimbursement is $500. You will make your own travel arrangements. You can move in as early as Sat., May 23. This is a federal program, therefore, federal policies apply to travel. You must contact Deb (515-294-9557) by April 10 with your travel plans. We need to know your departure and return cities, method of travel, flight numbers, etc. to coordinate airport shuttles and apartment key distribution. The program will reimburse round trip airfare (including ground transportation and checked bags); or round trip mileage only--no hotels, meals, etc. When the round trip is completed after August 2, the reimbursement forms will be submitted. You should get your reimbursement check by September 1. Contact Deb with questions.

Shuttle 
Airport shuttle schedules will be emailed to air travelers prior to arrival.

What do I bring with me
While furniture and major appliances are provided in each apartment, you may want to bring some additional things.  Besides your clothes, food and personal care items, you may want to bring:
- computer
- cell phone and charger (telephone jacks are not active in the apartment)
- personal telephone calling card
- ethernet cable if needed
- cookware, including microwave cookware
- tableware/dinnerware
- study lamp (heating appliances, halogen lamps and sun lamps may not be used because of fire hazard)
- television (you have Extended Basic Cable from Mediacom)
- bathroom, kitchen, and other household cleaning supplies
- toilet paper, paper towels, and garbage bags
- wastebaskets for your kitchen, bath, and bedroom
- laundry supplies such as soap, softener or dryer sheets
- bed linens (for 36" x 80" XL twin size mattress), mattress pad, bedspread (if desired), pillows, blankets
- towels and washcloths
- dishwasher soap
- alarm clock
- iron and ironing board

Consider communicating with others in your apartment regarding the possibility of sharing cookware, dinnerware and utinsels.

What to Wear
The dress code is casual (jeans, khakis, shorts, capris). Ask your mentor if your work environment has additional requirements (closed-toed shoes, etc.) Lab coats and safety glasses will be provided, if required. The poster presentation will require business attire, so plan accordingly. 

What we DO NOT provide 
- Transportation in and around Ames. City buses are available (see above)
- Payment for any outside activities, such as ball games, canoe trips, etc. will be the responsibility of each student.
- Arrangement of travel to Ames. You must make your own flight or driving arrangements (remember to confirm plans with Deb). 
- Membership in Iowa State University fitness facilities--students can purchase their own passes for this, however. 

What will my weekly schedule include
Forty hours a week is the normal work week. It will be up to you and your mentor to determine your schedule. Also, we are planning a weekly progress meeting and possibly some "out-of-laboratory" activities. In addition to your research experience, we try to enjoy some leisure activities.

Investing in tomorrow's scientists today
