Ihor Hlova at Ames Laboratory leads the CMI project "Novel Permanent Magnet Based on Highly Anisotropic TbCu7-type Compounds"
For more than 30 years, Nd2Fe14B-based magnets have dominated the permanent magnet market. The development of high-performance permanent magnet materials without critical elements that demonstrate energy products on par or better than those of Nd2Fe14B-based materials will become a major breakthrough in the permanent magnet industry. In view of advanced synthesis and processing capabilities developed recently by CMI, this project will develop next generation high-performance permanent magnet materials with anisotropic TbCu7-type structure possessing properties comparable to Nd2Fe14B-based analogues. The materials in focus will be composed of non-critical cerium, lanthanum, and samarium, in combination with primarily iron.
