Abstract

The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra of the erbium L-2 and L-3 edges in Er2Fe17 have been investigated experimentally as a function of temperature and theoretically using first principles electronic structure calculations. The spectral changes with temperature are rather dramatic and are related to the interplay between the Fe-3d and the Er-4f orbitals causing spin polarization of the 5d states.
