Researchers find first experimental evidence of elusive quantum state

In a news update published in the Harvard Gazette, scientists report the discovery of a “layer Hall effect” in a 2D topological Axion antiferromagnet, published in the journal Nature.

According to the article, "The work is believed to be the first experimental evidence of this type of quantum state and can one day help generate a magneto-electric effect that can lead to the next-generation of electronic devices, sensors, detectors and memory devices that use magnetic strips, such as credit cards."

The new study was completed by researchers from Harvard and other universities in the U.S. and abroad, and supported in part by the Center for the Advancement of Topological Semimetals (CATS) at Ames Laboratory.
