Ames Laboratory's research, recently published in Nature Materials, was featured in Nature New & Views:
"Writing in Nature Materials, Liang Luo and colleagues demonstrate a new avenue for controlling topology by using ultrashort pulses of light to transiently transform the Dirac semimetal ZrTe5 into a Weyl semimetal through coherently driving symmetry-breaking lattice vibrations (phonons)."
Scientists Jigang Wang, Liang Luo, and collaborators at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Alabama at Birmingham discovered a new light-induced switch that twists the crystal lattice of the material, switching on a giant electron current that appears to be nearly dissipationless.
