Featured Nature Protocols paper advances efforts to turn plastic waste into valuable materials

A new paper from Ames National Laboratory and Iowa State University researchers has been selected as the featured protocol on the Nature Protocols website, highlighting a new approach for studying technologies that transform plastic waste into valuable products. 

In the paper,“Comprehensive quantitative analysis of polyolefin hydrogenolysis toward plastic waste management,” researchers led by Wenyu Huang and Aaron Sadow describe a new method for evaluating technologies designed to convert plastic waste into useful products. One of the biggest challenges in developing better plastic recycling and upcycling processes is understanding exactly what happens to the plastic during the conversion process. A single reaction can produce hundreds of different compounds, making it difficult to determine how effective a catalyst or recycling method really is. 

The new protocol gives scientists a way to account for nearly everything produced during these complex reactions, from gases and liquid hydrocarbons to remaining solid material. By providing a complete picture of where the carbon from the original plastic ends up, the approach allows researchers to more accurately measure performance, compare technologies, and identify pathways that maximize value while minimizing waste. The result is a powerful tool for accelerating the development of more efficient and economically viable strategies for addressing the growing challenge of plastic waste.

The work was supported by the Institute for Cooperative Upcycling of Plastics (iCOUP), a Department of Energy Energy Frontier Research Center. Authors include researchers from Ames National Laboratory, Iowa State University, Cornell University, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
