Ames National Laboratory welcomed U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright for a high-profile visit that spotlighted the lab’s leadership in cutting-edge research and its vital role in advancing American energy independence and technological innovation. Joined by Iowa Senator Joni Ernst and Representatives Bob Latta (Ohio), Bruce Westerman (Ark.), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (Iowa), and Ashley Hinson (Iowa), Secretary Wright toured the lab’s facilities and engaged with scientists working on breakthrough technologies in critical materials, artificial intelligence, and next-generation energy solutions.
The visit included a deep dive into the work of the Critical Materials Innovation Hub, a DOE-led initiative headquartered at Ames that is driving efforts to secure domestic supply chains, reduce reliance on foreign sources, and strengthen U.S. competitiveness in materials science and energy technology. Secretary Wright emphasized the importance of investing in advanced manufacturing, AI, and rare earth mineral research to bolster national security and ensure affordable, reliable energy for all Americans.
