Energy Department Launches Historic Genesis Mission to Drive AI-Powered Scientific Revolution

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Energy today announced the launch of the Genesis Mission, a bold national initiative to transform American science and innovation through artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing. Established by Executive Order from President Trump, the mission aims to double the productivity and impact of U.S. science and engineering within a decade, securing America’s technological leadership and global competitiveness.

Led by Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil, the Genesis Mission will unite DOE’s 17 National Laboratories, industry, and academia to create the world’s most powerful integrated discovery platform—linking supercomputers, AI systems, quantum technologies, and advanced scientific instruments. This effort will accelerate breakthroughs in energy dominancediscovery science, and national security, ensuring America leads in the technologies that define the future.

“From the Manhattan Project to Apollo, America has always risen to the challenge,” said Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “The Genesis Mission will unleash the full power of our scientific enterprise to usher in a new golden era of discovery.”

Ames National Laboratory is proud to support the Genesis Mission, harnessing artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery and deliver transformative solutions in energy, national security, and beyond. Ames Lab brings decades of leadership in materials science, computational modeling, and machine learning to this effort. Our pioneering work in critical materials—essential for modern technology and national supply chain resilience—is powered by advanced AI tools that enable faster, smarter insights into complex materials behavior. Through Genesis, Ames continues to push the boundaries of intelligent materials design and data-driven discovery.
