Science Bowl is back in-person

Student at Science BowlThe 33rd annual Ames National Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl is back in-person after two years as a virtual event. On January 28th Iowa’s top science and math students will compete to answer questions that test their knowledge of biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and mathematics. The day-long, quiz-bowl format competition will take place on the Iowa State University campus, with the Ames Lab and Iowa State community providing much of the volunteer support.

In 1991 the Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl (NSB)® to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and pursue STEM careers. It is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. The Ames Lab/Iowa State event is one of 65 regional high school science bowl competitions to be held this year. The winners will advance to the NSB® finals April 27-May 1, 2023, in Washington, DC.

"Iowa's Regional Science Bowl events are great opportunities for high school and middle school students to come together through science,” said Deb Samuelson, event coordinator at Ames Lab. “We are excited to be back in person for 2023."
