Ames Lab celebrates 75th anniversary with a custom ice cream flavor

Ames Laboratory has always been known for its materials science, but in honor of its 75th anniversary, the U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory decided to branch out from its usual alloys, superconductors, and quantum materials with something just a little bit different-- ice cream.

Ames Lab partnered with the Creamery at Iowa State University's Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition to launch a flavor contest for its employees earlier this year. Staff from the Creamery and Ames Lab Director Adam Schwartz picked the winning combination-- a peanut butter ice cream called Materials Masterpiece, with a variety of mix-ins ranging including M&MTM candies and crushed OreoTM cookies.

The ice cream will be served for the first time at Ames Laboratory's employee celebration of its anniversary on May 17, 2022. It will be offered for a limited time for sale to the public at the Creamery beginning May 21.
