CMI Project 3.1.14: Sulfur dioxide leaching and electrowinning for the recovery of cobalt, lithium, and manganese from lithium-ion battery cake

Mac McCreless at Garrison Minerals leads the CMI project "Sulfur dioxide (SO2) leaching and electrowinning for the recovery of cobalt, lithium, and manganese from lithium-ion battery cake"

This project focuses on process synthesis for extraction and recovery of cobalt, lithium, manganese, graphite and nickel from lithium-ion battery cake centralized around a novel acid leaching step. The first year of work will establish a working basis for extraction performance at a bench-scale, qualify output streams for product-market fit, and begin pilot process synthesis. If successful, the collaborative project is situated to scale the technology rapidly.
