One of Iowa State University’s unique capabilities and advantages is that it has a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory, Ames National Laboratory, directly on campus, highly integrated with multiple academic departments across multiple colleges. This offers undergraduate students unique opportunities to engage with DOE scientific research and the operational organization that supports Ames National Laboratory's scientific mission. As part of the Iowa State's Strategic Plan, Ames Lab has a series of paid, undergraduate research and operations positions that allow students to work up to 300 hours at Ames Lab being mentored by scientists, staff and joint faculty.
Ames Lab is a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory dedicated to creating materials, inspiring minds to solve problems, and addressing global challenges. We are leaders in the discovery, synthesis, analysis, and application of new materials, novel chemistries, and transformational analytical tools.
