Facilities and Engineering Services

Ames Laboratory’s Facilities & Engineering Services department provides facilities, equipment, and services to support research and operations at the Laboratory. This includes:

  • Operations & maintenance of 13 federal buildings (approx. 340,000 square feet)

  • Design and construction activities for renovations and new facilities

  • Design, fabrication, testing, installation, and repair of research equipment

  • Custodial services for federal facilities

  • Support to Lab programs like key and card access, site sustainability, and continuity of operations

In addition to managing the maintenance, modifications, and improvements to Ames Laboratory infrastructure and spaces, Facilities and Engineering Services also provides complete R&D engineering, computer-aided design, fabrication and repair of mechanical and electronic research apparatus. While the group’s primary objective is to meet the needs of Ames Laboratory’s scientists, services are also available to anyone needing unique services not commercially available. Past projects include a glacier simulator that used hydraulic pressure to simulate the movement of a column of glacial ice over various bed materials from gravel to rigid rock conditions.

Ames Laboratory’s Facilities and Engineering Services group is located in the Metals Development building at 2415 Pammel Dr.
