Week 9 - Active for Life 2018

June 24th - 30th

This is our last official week of Active for Life at Ames Laboratory. I hope that everyone has had a great time completing the challenges and scavenger hunts. We have a few healthier lifestyle challenges for you guys this week as well as a few more scavenger hunt locations to try and rack up those bonus points one last time before the final tally goes in!

Scavenger Hunt Clue #1: This bridge was built by the Construction Engineers of the ISU AGC Student Chapter in the spring of 1990. It is near the North East Corner of the Cross Country Course. Also, if you make it to this scavenger hunt location, take some time to enjoy the rest of the scenery.  If you take the most direct walking path leaving Ames Laboratory from the East Entrance you will have walked about 1.02 miles one way.

Scavenger Hunt Clue #2: Did you know that there is a brick dedicated to Oprah Winfrey on campus? Find her brick in the Plaza of Heroines for bonus points! By taking the most direct walking path from exiting the East side of the Ames Lab building you will make it to this destination by traveling about .38 miles one way.

* Can you make it to both locations? You will earn 10 bonus points for making it to one location and 15 if you can make it to both!  Please take a selfie when you find them and submit them to activeforlife@ameslab.gov so that we can share them on the Ames Laboratory Active for Life website.

Weekly Challenge #1: Ergonomics is defined as an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely — called also biotechnology, human engineering, human factors. No matter what the job is, the goal is to make sure that you are safe, comfortable, and less prone to work-related injuries. Our own Libby Nelson will be giving a short presentation on Ergonomics and daily stretches that can be done in your work station.  This presentation will be in 140 TASF on Wednesday June 27 at 12PM. Please attend this presentation for 10 bonus points. Hopefully you will learn a little bit about keep your body safe at work.

Weekly Challenge #2:  Keep a food journal.  By keeping a food journal for the week we hope that it will bring more perspective into what you are taking into your body.  Are you just mindlessly munching? Again, the goal is to create an awareness of what you are using at nourishment for yourself.  By taking a week and noting what you are eating, maybe you will see that there are things you could easily cut out, or ways to make a quick substitution.

* You will earn 10 points for each challenge this week.  That brings your weekly extra point total up to 35 for the week!! I think that you guys can do it.  Let’s finish out this competition strong.

I hope you all are getting excited for the picnic in a couple of weeks also.  It will be at Brookside Park. A main dish and side will be provided from Hickory Park. We will give further information as it is closer.
