Week 8 - Active for Life 2018

June 17th - 23rd

Scavenger Hunt Clue: Under this bench there are sealed documents for the upcoming class of 2058 to open.  They were placed there by the class of 1958 for the 100th anniversary of Iowa State. Find this bench on campus. If you leave the Ames Laboratory building using the East exit and walk the most direct walking path, you will have walked approximately .46 miles one way.

* If you complete this scavenger hunt, take a selfie and submit it to activeforlife@ameslab.gov you will earn 10 bonus points. Your selfie will be shared on the Ames Laboratory website under the Week 8 tab.

Weekly Challenge: On Monday June 18th we will be hosting Recreation Services again for a Strength Training exercise.  This class will be in 301 Spedding hall and we will be using resistance bands for your exercises.  We hope that this class will appeal to both men and women, so please join us!

Weight training involves using some type of resistance to do a variety of exercises designed to challenge all your muscle groups, including your chest, back, shoulder, biceps, triceps, core, and lower body. The idea is that, when you use more resistance than your body normally handles, your muscles get stronger, along with your bones and connective tissue, all while building lean muscle tissue. That lean muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat, which means you burn more calories all day long, even when you're not exercising. Weight training doesn't mean you have to use things like dumbbells or machines, although those work. Anything that provides resistance can do the job—resistance bands, barbells, a heavy backpack, or, if you're a beginner, your own body weight might be enough to get you started. See this website for more information on using resistance bands and their benefits:

>> Bonus Challenge #2: Exercise your brain and keep your mind sharp. Here are some ideas on ways to give your brain a work out: read a book from a different genre, download a brainteaser app, learn a few words in another language or use your less dominant hand for everyday tasks. Click here for some fun information about brain teasers and brain training.  At the bottom of the page there are some links to various brain teasers/challenges.

* If you complete each challenge you will earn 20 bonus points, 10 for each one.

The weekly total for extra points this week is 30!

Don't forget to log your minutes and points here.
