Week 7 - Active for Life 2018

June 10th - 16th

Scavenger Hunt Clue: Can you find this old Iowa State University Sign? It was presented to the University by the class of 1949. If you make it to this University sign you may be able to make a quick stop by this restaurant and pick up a caffeinated beverage and baked good that “America Runs On.”

If you walk to most direct walking path leaving the East side of the Ames Lab building you will have walked .83 miles one way.

* If you complete this scavenger hunt, take a selfie and submit it to activeforlife@ameslab.gov you will earn 10 bonus points.  Your selfie will be shared on the Ames Laboratory website under the Week 7 tab.

Weekly Challenge: Sleep.  Sleep is so important and plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. It is recommended that adults get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. This week’s challenge is increase the amount of sleep that you are getting each night to a number closer to 7 or 8 hours, or maintain that amount of sleep that you are getting if it is already 7-8 hours/night. Follow this link to read some great information about how sleep affects you: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/sleep-deprivation-and-deficiency

>>Bonus challenge: Eat mindfully. For at least 3 meals this week eat without distractions. Turn off you device, sit down at the table, take time to enjoy your meal and think about what you are eating. Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the experience of eating and drinking, both inside and outside the body. Look over this article to review some basic information about mindful eating: https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/mindful-eating

* You can earn 10 challenge points for getting sleep as well as 10 challenge points for practicing mindful eating at least 3 meals this week.

Looking ahead: We will be having a Strength Training work out using resistance bands on Monday June 18th from 12 to 12:45 in 301 Spedding Hall. Since the class will be Monday on Week 8, we wanted to give extra notice so that you can bring work out clothing if you prefer.  This class will also be instructed by Recreation Services at Iowa State. We look forward to another successful class!

Be sure to complete the challenges, take selfies, and log your points
