Paul Canfield, who designs and discovers new materials and properties, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Canfield is a Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Robert Allen Wright Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Iowa State University. He’s also a senior scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory.
Canfield is part of a new class of more than 250 members elected to the academy this year. Canfield joins the physics section within the academy’s mathematical and physical sciences class. He’ll be formally recognized during ceremonies scheduled for October.
In addition to noting his scientific work, leaders of Iowa State and the Ames Laboratory praised Canfield for his innovation and enthusiasm:
- “Dr. Canfield’s election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is a tremendous professional achievement,” said Wendy Wintersteen, Iowa State’s president. “His outstanding work in new materials is an exemplar of Iowa State’s culture of innovation, and we are delighted that he is being recognized with this high honor."
- "Paul’s breadth of knowledge combined with his contagious enthusiasm for condensed matter physics makes him a major force in the field,” said Ames Laboratory Director Adam Schwartz. “He has made significant contributions to the study of superconductivity, heavy fermions, quantum criticality, and quasicrystals, to name only a few, and he is generous in sharing his expertise with the next generation of physicists. Ames Laboratory offers hearty congratulations for a recognition well-deserved.”
