Innovation
Cerium alloys with aluminum, yielding properties that qualify for big industrial applications with ramifications for rare earth economics.

Achievements
Three Al-Ce based alloys with exceptional properties, both cast and wrought, have been designated by The Aluminum Association, an administrator of global standards for aluminum materials.

The NEW Designations are:

  • 527: Al-Ce-Mg Cast
  • 8027: Al-Ce-Mg Wrought
  • 727: Al-Zn-Ce-Mg-Ni Cast

Significance and Impact

  • The designation sets standards for the alloys, giving them international recognition within the aluminum industry for technology adoption and commercial use at economically significant scale.
  • Improved properties include corrosion resistance, elimination of heat treatment, increased strength at elevated temperature, and direct reduction of cerium carbonate and oxide in the melter.
  • Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (processing, light-weighting).

Hub Goal Addressed
Diversifying the supply of REE by increasing the value of co-mined cerium. Recovery and conversion of critical materials into high-value end products. Industry adoption of REE technology.
