Ames Lab scientists contribute to newly published rare earths textbook

Two Ames Laboratory scientists have contributed a chapter to a textbook, “Rare Earth Chemistry,” newly published by De Gruyter. The volume is aimed at graduate students in materials science, but serves as a useful reference for anyone studying rare earths. 

Yaroslav Mudryk and Vitalij Pecharsky, both scientists at Ames Laboratory with expertise in solid state cooling, authored a chapter on rare earth materials’ role in that area, with an overview of the magnetocaloric effect, cryogenic applications, near-room-temperature magnetic refrigeration and giant magnetocaloric effect, and novel thermoelectric materials containing rare earths.
