Valley wins High School Science Bowl

West Des Moines Valley defeated Bettendorf 72-32 in the championship match to win the 25th Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl. Valley will advance to represent the region at the National Science Bowl®, to be held April 30-May 4 in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl®, and sponsors the finals competition.

Valley’s championship completed a perfect record for the day. Valley was 4-0 in round robin competition in the morning and won all five afternoon matches to get to the championship. That included a narrow 32-28 win over Bettendorf in the quarterfinals of the double-elimination science and math quiz-bowl competition. Bettendorf then defeated Dubuque Hempstead 42-22 in the semifinal to earn a rematch with Valley.

The Valley team was comprised of Gabriel Mintzer, Ryan Thompson, Charles Napier, Sunita Kolareth and Arun Velamuri and coached by Nate Speichinger. Representing Bettendorf High School were Amanda Romano, Kira Kuhn, Kennedy Knight, Nick Arevalo, and William Fawcett. Bettendorf was coached by Chris Like.

Third place went to Dubuque Hempstead High School with Pleasant Valley (also of Bettendorf) finishing fourth. A total of 40 teams competed in the competition. Ames Laboratory is one of a handful of sites across the country to host the event since it began in 1991.
