    Valley High School of West Des Moines never lost a match all day in winning the Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl here on January 23. Valley edged Dubuque’s Wahlert High School 48-42 in the championship match and will represent the Iowa Regional at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl®, April 28-May 2 in Washington, DC.

    Some of the brightest high school students from across Iowa will travel to Ames on January 23 to compete in the 25th  Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl. Forty teams of students will compete to answer questions about biology, chemistry, earth and space science, energy, mathematics, and physics in the day-long, quiz-bowl format competition.

    U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory senior metallurgist Iver Anderson has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). The NAI Fellows Selection Committee credited Anderson for demonstrating a “highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society.”

    Four Ames Laboratory physicists -- Paul Canfield, Sergey Bud'ko, Thomas Koschny, and Costas Soukoulis -- were recently named to Thomson Reuters' Highly Cited Researchers 2015. Researchers earned inclusion on the list by writing the greatest number of highly cited papers, ranking among the top 1 percent for their subject field and year of publication between 2003 and 2013.

    Research performed by U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory Associate Scientist Durga Paudyal was recently featured on the cover of the November 13, 2015 issue of Physical Review Letters.
