CMI Project 3.3.11: Rare earth permanent magnet motors from salvaged automobiles

Tim McIntyre at Oak Ridge National Laboratory leads the CMI project "Rare earth permanent magnet motors from salvaged automobiles"

Project Description: The project examines process feasibility for economically recovering critical materials from salvaged automobiles. The project team will perform research and development of novel methods that maximize value recovery of critical materials, components and sub-assemblies. The work will involve exploration of promising technology options and demonstration on a laboratory scale of an automated process that economically accesses currently unrecovered critical materials from salvaged automobiles. Also included in the work is completion of a techno-economic analysis (TEA) to characterize the value creation possibilities arising from the process developed.
