Ames Lab education programs

Education Programs

Ames Laboratory invests in the future of science through education programs and mentorships which nurture undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and early career scientists. Our outreach programs are designed to promote early interest in STEM fields to K-12 students in the state of Iowa.

Students today. At Ames Laboratory, we believe in the future of science, which means training students in the science we are doing right now. From undergraduate and community college students to faculty, we offer programs that inspire minds about scientific discovery.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) – Our SULI internships support the advancement of undergraduates pursuing careers and graduate work in science and engineering.

Visiting Faculty Programs (VFP) -- Ames Laboratory researchers are paired on research projects with faculty members and their students from institutions historically underrepresented in the research community.

Community College Internships (CCI) – We place community college students in technical-training internships in science, engineering and technology. Go to: www.ameslab.gov/education/cci.

Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) – Outstanding graduate students receive supplemental awards to support their graduate thesis research opportunities.

National Science Bowl - Over 5,000 students have competed in our annual high-school and middle-school Science Bowl since 1991.  NSB is a Department of Energy Office of Science national math and science quiz-bowl competition.
