Pleasant Valley wins 2019 Ames Lab High School Science Bowl

Pleasant Valley High School of Bettendorf won the 2019 Ames Laboratory Regional High School Science Bowl on Jan 26, defeating West Des Moines Valley48-20 in the championship match. Pleasant Valley topped a field of 36 teams and will represent the Iowa Region at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl (NSB)®  April 25-29, 2019 in Washington, DC.

The Pleasant Valley team of Sujay Marisetty (Sr.), Aditya Desai (Jr.), Aadil Manazir (Jr.) , Mitchell Strobbe (Jr.) and Aman Manazir (Sr.)  dominated the competition, going undefeated in the morning qualifying rounds and then winning all five of their afternoon matches. The team is coached by Bartley Meinke.

Valley, which finished third last year was second, Ames was third (second last year) and Dubuqe Sr. finished fourth again this year. Defending champion Johnston was eliminated with losses to Pleasant Valley and Ames.

Other schools, besides those mentioned above, advancing to the Sweet 16 championship round included Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Ottumwa, Colo-Nesco, Earlham, Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Iowa City West, Des Moines Dowling, Dubuque Hempstead, Liberty, and Des Moines Central.
